Spring is here and the one flower we can always count on giving our veld colour this time of year is the Pincushion Protea, also known as the sugarbush.  With their shades of yellow, orange and red, it is always a spectacular sight to see with the land a wash in these colours. A hardy, fynbos plant, that does well in poor soil, attracts many birds and insects, especially in the early morning, when they yield their highest nectar flow.  Sunbirds are often seen around these striking and well known plants.  Flowering from around July through to November and only in areas where there is winter rain with hot dry summers.
